Staying in Touch with Our Elected Officials

 

Here is information you can use to stay in touch with our elected officials.  After the “Tips” below, you'll find information on those in office who represent us.  Some are Democrats who want to hear from us as they plan and pass laws for the good of our people.  But we also do well to contact the Republicans, so that they hear our side on issues, and feel the opposition from thoughtful, active Americans.

 

Tips for Staying in Touch with Our Elected Officials

 

  1. Phones and faxes are handled by staff  who tally opinions and report these to the elected official they work for.

 

  1. These staff  are friendly,  they listen to you, and they close by saying they will pass along your opinion to the elected official.

 

  1. Be yourself on the phone.  No need to sound clever or sophisticated.

 

  1. Before calling, plan what you will say in a few sentences.  For example, “My name is Jim Hoffmann, and I live in Sun Lakes, Arizona.  I'm calling to urge Senator Kyl to support the Democrats' proposed legislation to bring the troops home from Iraq.  I feel this conflict is mainly a civil war and the Iraqis must find their way to a solution.  I know Senator Kyl feels differently, but I want him to know that most of us, including many Republicans, feel the need to end the war in Iraq.”

 

  1. After one or two calls like this, you'll begin to feel how straight forward this process is, and that it is something you can do in a few minutes.
